Research activity

Research activity of the MsM division is mainly focused in the field of application of the computer science in metallurgy and materials science as well as mechanics in the broad sense. The goal is to solve problems arising during development of modern as well as the optimization of existing industrial technologies. Various numerical approaches starting from the conventional modeling techniques finishing on complex multiscale models are used and developed within the MsM division. Particularly interesting are multiscale models based on discrete approaches, where information from various scales can be taken into account to describe macroscopic material response.

Major research areas involve:

  • Modelling of metalforming and related processes with commercial software
  • Modelling of microstructure evolution under processing conditions (analytical approaches, discrete techniques, machine learning)
  • Multi scale modelling from nano scale to macro scale (Molecular Dynamics, Cellular Automata, Monte Carlo, Crystal Plasticity, Finite Element, Mesh Free)
  • Modelling of the high velocity impact phenomena
  • Modelling based on the digital material representation concept
  • Modelling of fracture phenomena under processing and exploitation conditions
  • Development of automated computer aided technologicial processes design approaches
  • Modelling of additive manufacturing processes
  • Modelling of welding processes
  • Modelling of thin sheets deposition processes
  • Modelling of incremental forming processes
  • Development of rheological models at various leangth scales
